Major Marcus Rashford future update with Man United in tough predicament

Marcus Rashford looks increasingly likely to start the season as a Manchester United player, talkSPORT understands.

The 28-year-old's dreams of making his loan to Barcelona permanent have been shattered by England teammate Anthony Gordon's £70million move from Newcastle to the Camp Nou.

United would still like to sell to get his wages of more than £325,000-a-week off the pay role.

And Rashford ideally wants to leave Old Trafford having fallen out with the club's hierarchy.

The United academy graduate hasn't featured for the club since December 2024.

He was shipped off on loan to Aston Villa during the second half of the 2024/25 season.

Barcelona then brought him to Catalonia for the 2025/26 campaign on an initial loan deal.

Rashford chipped in with 14 goals and as many assists in 49 matches across all competitions to help Barca retain the LaLiga title.

However, despite becoming a fan favourite, Hansi Flick's side decided against activating the £26million buy option in his contract.

Re-Marc-able return to squad?

And a lack of willing suitors this summer means that the player being integrated back into Michael Carrick's first-team squad is now firmly on the table.

Rashford, who is tied down at the Threatre of Dreams until 2028, will be given three weeks off after the World Cup before returning to pre-season training at United's Carrington base.

He is currently on Three Lions duty in North America, where he has scored once from his four outings.

And his performances across the pond have led to United being told to welcome him back into their set-up.

United will not want Rashford's situation to drag until the closing stages of the window, with his future affecting the club's search for a new winger this summer.

talkSPORT understands that United have opened talks with West Ham over signing Crysencio Summerville.

And they also have Ismaila Sarr on their radar having scored 33 goals for Crystal Palace in the last two years.

Though and deal for a new wide man is dependent on whether Rashford will be staying or leaving.

Rashford currently boasts a £40m release clause - withtwo teams blocked from activating it.
