The former Hull City and Cardiff City goalkeeper is back at Rangers under Derek McInnes.

Rangers have confirmed the return of club hero Allan McGregor as he becomes lead goalkeeper coach under new manager Derek McInnes.

The 44-year-old returned to the Premiership side briefly as part of Barry Ferguson’s interim backroom team in 2025, but over a year on, has been permanently added to McInnes’ coaching ranks. He replaces Sal Bibbo who recently moved to English Premier League side Coventry City.

McGregor won four leagues titles across two spells at Rangers, alongside becoming a four-time Scottish Cup winner and lifting the League Cup on five occasions, featuring for Scotland, Cardiff City, Hull City and others in an impressive playing career. He will work alongside new Rangers keeper Ivor Pandur and back-up Liam Kelly as senior options between the sticks alongside upcoming prospects.

McGregor said: “I’m really excited to be back and to be joining the club’s coaching staff. Everyone knows what this club means to me, so to have the opportunity to return and help the club in the present and future is a real privilege.

McInnes explained the move by stating: “Allan is a fantastic addition to our coaching staff and brings with him a wealth of experience. He knows exactly what it takes to be successful at Rangers and understands the standards that are required every day. His knowledge, expertise and winning mentality will be a huge asset to the group, and I am looking forward to working closely with him as we continue our preparations for the season ahead.”

What role does Allan McGregor have at Rangers?

The club added: “Rangers can confirm the following updates to our coaching staff. Former Rangers goalkeeper, and Hall of Fame inductee, Allan McGregor has joined the club as lead goalkeeping coach, replacing Sal Bibbo. McGregor enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Ibrox, making more than 500 appearances for the Light Blues before retiring in 2023.

“He will now lead the goalkeeping infrastructure across the club moving forward. Rangers would like to thank the players and staff who have departed the club recently and wish them well for the future.”
