Matty Young opens up on Sunderland ambition and why League One club were the perfect loan…

The Sunderland youngster is currently on his new club’s pre-season training camp in Portugal

Matty Young believes Huddersfield Town is the perfect club for the next stage of his development.

The 19-year-old, widely regarded as one of the club's best academy prospects who has featured for England at youth level, signed a new long-term deal on Wearside this summer before joining the League One club.

Young spent the last two seasons on loan with Salford City, who were beaten in the League Two play-off final at the end of last season, and believes stepping up a level will bring the additional pressure he needs to develop further. Young also believes being able to stay in close contact with Sunderland will help him as he takes the next step in his career.

“Being offered a new deal with two years left shows that Sunderland have put their faith in me to develop in the way I need to develop to push closer to their first team," he told club media.

“I know that Huddersfield’s going to play a big part in that, and this upcoming season’s going to be massive, in terms of finding out who I really am as a goalkeeper, and how I can progress in a higher league, in front of bigger crowds, more pressure, and that’s something that was one of the big talking points this summer in getting the right loan to the right club, and obviously location for myself, it helps.

“Last year, I did pop in at Sunderland here and then just to check in with them, and I know that’s very important, to make sure that both clubs are very much involved in the loan itself, and making sure that we are both getting the most out of it. I think Huddersfield hit the nail on the head, in terms of everything that it has, and the resources it’s got is brilliant.”

Young believes it is the right move to help him realise his long-term ambition of being Sunderland's number one.

He said: "I think all these loans that I’ve been on in the past and now present, and obviously in the future, will definitely play a big part in where I want to go, and what level I want to play at, and what success I want to bring this club during this journey, and also Sunderland itself, when I do hit that stage.”
