Aston Villa have identified the Tottenham midfielder to replace the injured Amadou Onana.
Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed the best start to the summer transfer window across the Premier League, much to the surprise of our fans, bringing in three defenders, two midfielders and a goalkeeper already. And the club bosses remain confident of adding firepower to the frontline.
The arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes has put the futures of some midfielders in the current roster in jeopardy. One of those is Lucas Bergvall. The Sweden international has expressed a wish to leave the north London club this summer. The central midfielder wants to ensure he is playing regular first-team football next season after finding himself on the periphery under Roberto De Zerbi.
Lucas Bergvall has already attracted interest from several clubs. Nottingham Forest have him on their list to replace Elliott Anderson, while Borussia Dortmund are also keeping tabs on his situation. Now, another club has joined the mix.
Aston Villa line up move for Lucas Bergvall
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa could target Lucas Bergvall to replace injured Amadou Onana in their engine room.
Amadou Onana has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee while playing for Belgium at the World Cup. He was substituted 21 minutes into his side’s 4-1 win over the United States in the last 16 earlier this week. After being treated on the pitch, the combative midfielder limped off and was later seen on crutches and wearing a knee brace.
Onana is expected to be out for at least nine months, and potentially as long as a year depending on the speed of his rehab and recovery. This suggests that the 24-year-old will miss the first half of the 2026/27 season, prompting Aston Villa to now act in the transfer market. But the Villans have been in the market for midfield reinforcements even before Onana’s injury, and that development has led to them lining up a move for Bergvall.
Bergvall could be tempted to join Aston Villa
Recent reports suggest De Zerbi and Tottenham officials have held private talks with Bergvall to assure him he remains central to the club’s long-term plans and that they do not have any intentions to let him leave this summer. But given the high-profile additions of Tonali and Fernandes, coupled with Spurs’ reduced number of games following the failure to qualify for Europe, Bergvall remains anxious over first-team minutes next season.
It won’t be a surprise for the fans if the Swedish talent pushes for a move away from N17. And a move to Villa may just be ideal for him. It would allow the 20-year-old to earn regular minutes and establish himself in Unai Emery’s first XI. Plus, the appeal of playing in the Champions League cannot be discounted.
Following Onana’s long-term knee injury, the Villans might turn to Bergvall to fill the void created by the Belgium international. That said, it remains to be seen whether they make an offer for our midfield talent.
