Sunderland set stance over Brian Brobbey future after stellar World Cup performance

The latest transfer talk from Sunderland as the Black Cats have reportedly set their stance over the future of striker Brian Brobbey.

Sunderland have reportedly set their stance on the future of striker Brian Brobbey amid claims of interest from a number of clubs.

The former Ajax striker enjoyed a productive first season in the Premier League after joining the Black Cats last summer as he scored seven goals in 31 league games to help Regis Le Bris’ side secure a seventh place finish in the Premier League table and land a place in this season’s Europa League. Brobbey’s performances were enough for him to earn a place in the Netherlands squad for this summer’s World Cup finals and he scored three goals in as many group stage games before Ronald Koeman’s men fell to a penalty shoot-out defeat in a round-of-32 tie against Morocco.

There have been claims the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus had all shown an interest in the Black Cats frontman - but former Sunderland scout Mick Brown believes his old club won’t allow the striker to depart without a fight.

He told Football Insider: "Brian Brobbey is a player who has really impressed me since he came to Sunderland. They took a bit of a gamble on signing him from the Eredivisie, because strikers coming from that league can be very hit and miss in the Premier League. But they took a chance on him, that chance had paid off, and now other clubs are looking to capitalise on that and lure him away from Sunderland. Especially after his performances at the World Cup, where he really impressed, I'm told a few clubs are having a look at him and could try to make a move.

"From Sunderland's point of view, though, there's no way they're going to let him go because he's become such an important part of their squad. The manager isn't looking to lose any of his players, because they're in Europe next season and they know they're going to need a strong squad if they want to compete. So they're not going to be letting Brobbey go easily, they want to keep hold of him, and if any club wants to make a move it will have to be a very good one."
