Leeds United look as though they need to address their goalkeeper position once again this summer.
Lucas Perri did not have the impact most expected him to have following his arrival from Lyon last summer. So, with the Brazilian out of form, United once again had to rely on Karl Darlow.
However, like Perri, Darlow’s future at Leeds is also uncertain, with the Welshman currently a free agent as Everton and Manchester United attempt to lure him away from West Yorkshire.
That is why when Leeds found themselves linked to Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, it came as no surprise. But one of United’s Premier League rivals could now be set to step up their own pursuit of Suzuki.
Aston Villa could step up their pursuit of Zion Suzuki amid Emi Martinez interest
As well as Leeds, Aston Villa are the other side that has been credited in multiple reports for having an interest in Suzuki.
Villa could be set to ramp up their pursuit of the Parma goalkeeper amid the uncertainty surrounding Emi Martinez.
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Juventus have had direct contact with Martinez’s camp over a potential move. The Italian giants have Martinez as their top target.
Negotiations for the Argentinian shot-stopper are expected to continue after the World Cup.
Naturally, if Martinez leaves, then Villa will be desperate to bring a replacement in.
So, if Leeds are serious about signing Suzuki, they must get a move on before Villa potentially pip them to a potential deal.
Still doubtful over whether a potential Zion Suzuki deal will happen
The vast majority of the reports linking us with Suzuki are coming out of Italy. So I’m still sceptical as to whether a deal for the shot-stopper will actually materialise.
On paper, Suzuki would appear to be a good signing. At just 23, he has two seasons of Serie A experience under his belt. On top of this, he has plenty of international experience as well.
If United could get all of this for the reported £26million it would cost to sign Suzuki, then Leeds may have finally put an end to their goalkeeping woes.
But until we see any concrete evidence of bids going in, I’m not going to get my hopes up too much.
Personally, a new goalkeeper would be one of the signings I’d prioritise. But the lack of names we have been linked to has started to concern me.
There’s still plenty of time to get a deal done for a new shot stopper this summer. Hopefully, the 49ers can pull a rabbit out of the hat and sign a James Trafford or a Suzuki, for example.
