Man United's £39m move for Ederson at serious risk of collapse despite agreeing deal

Manchester United may not proceed with signing Brazilian midfielder Ederson despite agreeing a deal with Atalanta, talkSPORT understands.

The two clubs settled on a fee of £38.8million for the midfielder in early June with Ederson appearing primed to sign a four-year deal, with the option to a further year.

It was reported that Man United would fork out an initial £35m to sign the Brazilian, with almost £4m to be paid in potential future add-ons.

Atalanta knew they had to cash in on the player this window to avoid losing him on a free next summer.

However, Ederson's Old Trafford move could be off altogether with the Premier League club keen to conduct thorough medical exams on the player before going through with the deal.

Clarity on the situation s expected once the World Cup finishes.

The 26-year-old has made 180 appearances for Atalanta and was part of their 2023/24 Europa League-winning squad.

However, head coach Raffaele Palladino did not play him in their final Serie A match of the season amid the links with Man United.

"It was a choice agreed with the player because there is something happening on the transfer market," he said via Football Italia.

"The fact that a player like him is being followed by such an important club should be a source of pride."

Carrick returned to Old Trafford in January on a deal until the end of the 2025/26 season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

He thoroughly impressed as United went on to finish third in the Premier League, marking their return to Champions League football.

The former midfielder has a contract that runs until 2028.

United are looking to sign a midfield replacement for Casemiro, who leaves the club this summer and looks set to sign for Inter Miami.

Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are also understood to be targets for United.
