Newcastle United transfer imminent as player spotted at training ground after 2031 deal agreed

Sean Steur has arrived at Newcastle United to complete a £23million transfer from Ajax.

The teenager is set to join for £23million, including add-ons and will become the Magpies’ third summer signing after the arrivals of Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure.

Newcastle’s transfer business has picked up over the past week with the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £100million as well as the additions of Toure and Steur.

Steur arrived on Tyneside on Tuesday to undergo his medical before signing a five-year deal. The youngster has made just 26 senior appearances for Ajax after progressing through the club’s academy.

He was captured by Sky Sports cameras at Newcastle United’s training ground on Wednesday as he completed the first part of his medical.

NUFC transfer clause

As part of the agreement, sources in the Netherlands have claimed Ajax will have a 12% sell-on clause on any profit Newcastle make should Steur be sold on in the future. Newcastle’s three transfers so far this summer have all been young with high sell-on values should they realise their potential on Tyneside.

Newcastle were infamously unable to agree a sell-on clause for Elliot Anderson when they sold him to Nottingham Forest for £35million in 2024. Despite the player coming through Newcastle’s academy, the club did not receive anything when Anderson was sold to Manchester City for a club-record £116million fee this summer.

Steur won’t be the only Newcastle player with a sell-on clause as club captain Bruno Guimaraes has a 20% sell-on due to Lyon should Newcastle sell the player. The Brazilian has been linked with a summer transfer exit from Newcastle but the club insists he is not for sale at any price.
