Wharfside and new Old Trafford masterplan: Everything you need to know

Manchester United today confirmed a proposed location for the club's new 100,000-seater stadium.

In a milestone announcement, United said it would sit at the heart of a new 'Stadium District', about 350 metres north-west of the existing Old Trafford stadium.

The announcement came as part of an ambitious masterplan for the 'sports-led' regeneration of the Trafford Wharfside area, published on Thursday by Trafford Council.

The new stadium has been billed as the 'flagship landmark' of the wider Wharfside development, which the council said would be 'a network of attractive neighbourhoods in which to live, work, wander and explore'.

The masterplan includes new and improved public transport links, enhanced rail connectivity and extensive walking and cycling infrastructure.

The vision speaks to a 'diverse neighbourhood', creating 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes.

United said that together, the mixed-use development across 150 hectares has the potential to offer a £7.3bn per annum boost to the UK economy.

Councillor Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said: "We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day."

United said no decision has been made regarding the future of the existing Old Trafford stadium.

A consultation process, meanwhile, is now due to open.
