Harry Wilson has lifted the lid on last season’s transfer window when he came close to joining Leeds United.
That was on deadline day last September when the attacker was preparing for Wales’ World Cup qualifier with Kazakhstan and seemed set to leave former club Fulham.
In the end the Craven Cottage outfit pulled the plug on the deal in the final hours - and Wilson remained with the Whites where he put together the best season of his career.
But as his contract there ticked down it seemed inevitable Leeds would come in for him again – and on Wednesday they confirmed they had belatedly got their man.
The 29-year-old has agreed a contract that will keep him at Elland Road until 2030 and make him a key part of Daniel Farke’s squad.
In doing so he will join up with compatriot Ethan Ampadu, who Wilson revealed has been continually selling the dream to his international colleague.
Speaking about last September, Wilson told the club website : “I would say it was Ethan that was doing the majority of the calls.
“I was away with Wales at the time, it happened that the deadline day fell on an international window and I think he had a slight knock, so he wasn't there.
“He was blowing up my phone. I was down in the Vale trying to concentrate on the Wales game and he was blowing up my phone, making sure I signed and different stuff to make sure we could get the deal done.
“That's a bit like his game, he's like that with his calls as well. If you don't answer, he's ringing, he's ringing you again. He said he was desperate to get me here and he's played a big part in that.”
“But ultimately we ran out of time but I think I always think things happen for a reason and are we 10-11 months down the line now and I'm here so it all worked out well in the end.”
Wilson and Ampadu will not be the only members of Craig Bellamy’s squad plying their trade for United. Daniel James and Joe Rodon remain at Elland Road, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow has been offered a contract by the club.
The winger believes Leeds will benefit from that familiarity: “I think in the Welsh squad we're such a tight-knit group, so that naturally brings you close, to be playing with the boys at club level and international level, I think that's going to bode well.
“I feel like when you're playing for a team, if you are close knit, if the changing room's tight, I think when you go out on that pitch, I feel like ultimately you perform better.
“So that Welsh contingent now only got bigger with me arriving, I think that’s only positive.”
