Revealed - Dan Burn picks between World Cup heroics and Newcastle United cup win

Dan Burn added to his already unforgettable career to help England triumph over Mexico last weekend.

Dan Burn has placed his valiant England display alongside Newcastle United’s long-awaited Carabao Cup trophy.

The 34-year-old was a hero in both - scoring the opener as the Magpies dethroned Liverpool at Wembley. At the weekend, he made his World Cup bow at the Azteca, becoming a national hero as the Three Lions edged out a passionate Mexico side.

Burn earned bold praise for putting his body on the line with several key blocks, headers and clearances as England recorded a famous victory. He has now ranked the triumph as one of the best two moments in his roller-coaster career - alongside the unforgettable Wembley win.

Dan Burn ranks England vs Mexico

“The way the game was going, it's one of them where I know I've been brought for certain scenarios,” Burn told talkSPORT. “I could see already what was coming and just preparing yourself to come on.

“I'm 34 and I've played over 500 games, so it's really just the same game, just a different level. I wasn't nervous coming on, I knew what I was coming on to do and just wanted to get on and help the lads. So of those 500 games, where does that one rank? It's got to be top two.

“I've said that between that and the cup final at Newcastle. It's hard because, obviously, I'm a Geordie and it was so long since we'd won something. That was such a huge thing for Newcastle. But as I said, it was hard to even have this dream when I was a kid.

“Maybe the last year and a half, it's something that I've always wanted to do. It's nice that no-one can take that away from me now. I've played at the World Cup, so it's special, but I want more.”

‘I know what I’m good at’ - Dan Burn

Burn is the remaining Newcastle player left at the World Cup. Before the tournament, some England fans questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to take him.

Having now justified his selection, Burn added: “I understand people's opinion, but the only people's opinions I care about are the manager's and my teammates. But I think that was nice as well, because I think until you get on the pitch and you show people what you can do, I feel like you probably earn that little bit of respect from it as well.

“I came to the tournament knowing that I wasn't going to start. I'd had the conversations with the manager, but I also know what I'm good at. I knew there were going to be opportunities where I could come and make a difference, so I'm just happy that I could do that.”
