Ben Jacobs: Man United could turn to £43m-rated French midfielder if Ederson move collapses -…

Manchester United’s move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson is in danger of falling through.

United had already agreed a £34 million fixed fee, plus £3.9m in potential add-ons, for Ederson last month. The Brazilian had also agreed on personal terms.

However, the deal could now collapse due to concerns over the 27-year-old’s fitness. United want to conduct a thorough medical examination before completing the transfer.

Journalist Ben Jacobs now claims United could make a move for Roma’s Manu Kone if they do not sign Ederson.

“United have made enquiries into Manu Kone from Roma, and if the Ederson deal falls through, that could be revisited by United.” Jacobs told The United Stand.

Kone could be a good alternative to Ederson

Kone enjoyed a brilliant campaign with Roma last season, helping the Italian side secure Champions League qualification.

The 25-year-old featured in 29 Serie A matches, contributing two goals and three assists.

Kone’s performances at Roma earned him a call-up to France’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has started three of Les Bleus’ five matches at the tournament.

His league statistics from last season are close to Ederson’s, making him a strong alternative to the Brazilian.

Kone ranked in the 58th percentile for duel win percentage, higher than Ederson’s 54th percentile. However, the Atalanta ace edged him for possessions won (74th v 61st).

The French midfielder also ranked slightly higher for forward passes (87th v 86th).

Ederson held a slim advantage for progressive carries (74th v 73rd). The Brazilian also outranked Kone for key passes (69th v 56th) and progressive passes (79th v 62nd).

Ederson would be the better signing for Man United, but the stats suggest Kone is not far behind.

Roma’s sporting director Tony D’Amico reportedly wants at least £43m for the Toulouse academy product, a relatively modest fee in the current transfer market.
