Newcastle United are pushing to secure a deal for Freiberg and Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi.
Newcastle United have reportedly reached an agreement with Freiberg for Johan Manzambi, with the deal now subject to the midfielder agreeing personal terms.
The Magpies sold Sandro Tonali to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for £100million but have moved quickly to bolster their midfield with the £23million signing of 18-year-old Sean Steur from Dutch giants Ajax.
Eddie Howe’s side now hope to make Manzambi their fourth summer arrival having also signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and left winger Bazoumana Toure from Stade de Reims and Hoffenheim, respectively.
Newcastle United cautious over Johan Manzambi deal
It has now been reported by Sky Germany and The Athletic that Newcastle have agreed a fee in the region of £50million for Manzambi. But while the 20-year-old is thought to be keen on a move to St James’ Park, personal terms have not yet been finalised.
Manzambi has interest from elsewhere on the back of excellent World Cup and Bundesliga campaigns.
The midfielder has been one of the standout performers at the World Cup, scoring three goals - including a brace against Bosnia & Herzegovina - and registering two assists to help Switzerland advance into the quarter-finals.
They face Argentina on Sunday but Manzambi is a doubt for the game after missing the last 16 penalty shootout victory over Colombia with a knee injury.
Before heading to North America, Manzambi scored seven goals and provided the same number of assists to help Freiberg finish seventh in the league and reach the final of the Europa League.
Until a full agreement is in place, Newcastle are proceeding with caution after being burnt earlier this month when they agreed a deal for Spanish winger Victor Munoz, only for Liverpool to hijack the move.
