Leeds United favourite close to Old Trafford transfer as contract talks break down – The…

Leeds United were in talks to renew Karl Darlow’s contract upon its expiry at the end of June, but the experienced Wales international looks set to move elsewhere.

The Whites have been combing over goalkeeping options for the past month or so since the season ended, with one of the options being retaining Karl Darlow.

However, the lack of noise on Darlow after his contract expired meant that the 49ers have to explore alternatives.

One of the interested parties in signing Darlow were our bitter rivals Man Utd. Clearly, the Old Trafford club were impressed by Darlow’s solid performance in April when we won 2-1.

At 35, it’s hardly a shock that Darlow is entertaining offers to move on from Elland Road. There’s not long left in his career and a lucrative contract, even as a backup elsewhere, is incredibly inviting.

Now, The Athletic are reporting that Darlow is close to signing for Man U.

It’s claimed that there are still minor details to iron out between the two parties. But, it’s said a transfer for the former Leeds ‘keeper to move over the Pennines is at “advanced stages”.

The motive behind Michael Carrick’s side is outlined in the report:

“[Man] United have wanted an experienced goalkeeper, ideally with Premier League pedigree and qualifying as homegrown, to help bring on Lammens and rotate as required with the club in the Champions League next season.”

It’s not a surprise to me and I don’t really blame Darlow for heading that way.

Darlow owes us nothing and has been a superb servant. That is despite the fact he’s had to settle for being second choice most of his time here.

When called upon, he was tremendous last season and was a major part in how we comfortably stayed up in the end.

He was a core part of that performance to hold on for a win at Old Trafford, which is fondly remembered.

Now, Leeds have to get a new replacement through the doors that shows our intent for next season.
