Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-game ban following his red card against Mexico. England manager Thomas Tuchel will now be without the former Liverpool defender for Saturday's quarter-final clash with Norway and a potential semi-final appearance.
Red cards typically carry a one-match suspension but Quansah has been hit with a two-game ban. The decision is also likely to infuriate the Football Association, particularly in light of FIFA's decision to shelve Folarin Balogun's ban so he could feature for the United States following a personal intervention from President Donald Trump.
The situation has thrown FIFA into turmoil, with the world governing body now facing accusations of operating with double standards. England defender Quansah was dismissed following a challenge on Mexico's Jesus Gallardo, receiving his marching orders after a VAR review.

There is no avenue for a direct appeal at the World Cup, but the FA had been weighing up their options in response to FIFA's lenient stance towards Balogun following Trump's call to FIFA president Gianni Infantino. That avenue ultimately led nowhere, and the FIFA disciplinary committee has now handed down a severe two-match suspension.
The committee holds the authority to determine the length of any ban. Quansah's challenge was classified as 'serious foul play', which is the grounds upon which the two-game suspension was imposed.
The suspension leaves Tuchel facing a real dilemma at right-back. Reece James is the most natural choice, but the Chelsea skipper is in a race against the clock to prove his fitness for the Norway fixture after sitting out England's last three matches with a hamstring problem.

Djed Spence, Ezri Konsa and John Stones are all potential options at right-back, while midfielder Declan Rice had a brief stint in the position against DR Congo.
Tuchel may also opt for a five-man defensive setup, which proved effective in the closing moments of Monday's 3-2 win over Mexico after England were reduced to 10 men.
Keeping Erling Haaland quiet will be the Three Lions' chief concern in Miami on Saturday. Several pundits are calling for Dan Burn to be handed a starting berth.
The Newcastle centre-back's imposing physique and dominance in the air are viewed as key attributes in dealing with the Norwegian talisman.
