Harry Wilson is back at Elland Road for good having signed for Leeds United this week. His last outing here was witnessing Lukas Nmecha’s last-minute winner vs Fulham.
The first piece of business this summer has been confirmed with Harry Wilson joining United on a free transfer. Interest at Elland Road has been long-standing for the Wales international, but he’s finally put pen to paper.
After Leeds’ deal for Wilson collapsed last August, though, we were forced to watch on as he had the best season of his career.
Harry Wilson may owe Gabriel Gudmundsson apology after shocking Leeds United flashpoint
The last experience Wilson had of Elland Road was him becoming the villain of the show. A cagey affair in January saw the match dragging on at 0-0 with limited chances either way.
However, as Gabriel Gudmundsson got joy down Leeds’ left, he broke away from Wilson in what looked a huge chance to open the scoring. The then-Fulham winger proceeded to crop Gudmundsson from behind to take a cynical yellow card.
Gudmundsson was left in a heap after the challenge. Wilson, unsurprisingly, was greeted with a seriously hostile response from the home fans.
He was hooked not long after and watched on from the away dugout as Lukas Nmecha volleyed home a late winner.
If there is any potential tongue-in-cheek tension after Gudmundsson was booted in the air by Wilson, I’m sure it’ll be quickly quashed by the Welshman. If anything, he’ll now be welcomed at ‘Dirty Leeds’.
Leeds United’s full-backs Gabriel Gudmundsson and Jayden Bogle will love Harry Wilson deal
Signing Wilson is a great deal for Leeds without even any added context.
However, the way it impacts our full-backs is massive. Bogle was great last season. But, one improvement could be his output in the final third – he was limited in that regard by the fact he was often isolated.
Adding a natural winger to our right-hand side is huge for Bogle – it gives him an extra outlet and support to connect with.
However, Gudmundsson will indirectly benefit from having a right-winger in the side too. When we’ve come unstuck in the league, we’ve looked quite imbalance on each wing. Noah Okafor and the Swede provide consistent thrust, which not matched on the right.
Adding balance with a natural right-winger to complement Bogle means we aren’t funnelling most of our attacks down the left. If teams know they can double up on Gudmundsson without the same threat on the right, they will. But, with Wilson and Bogle partnering up, it leaves us more dangerous on either side.
