**Callum Wilson has officially been announced as a Brentford player this afternoon.**
The 34-year-old made 35 appearances in his one season at West Ham, scoring seven goals. He was a player you could often rely on to score a goal when he came on.
When we signed Wilson, I don’t think there was one West Ham fan that wanted it to happen. His history of scoring against us, his ‘touch of magic’ quote after he scored a handball goal against us Also, he was just coming off the back of an awful injury hit final season at Newcastle.
However, he proved us all wrong. He was fit, hungry, and brilliant for the Hammers. The only problem was his fitness, he couldn’t start games, when he did he was a passenger, but when he came off the bench he was quality.
A lot of fans expected him to leave, and so did I. He’s still more than good enough for the Premier League and is chasing a spot in the 100 club. He is five goals off of that century, and I’d expect him to do it in one more season and Brentford have given him the best opportunity to do that.
When Wilson wasn’t named on the released list, and we kept his name up on the website I had false hope, maybe he was going to stay and help fire us out of the Championship. But it wasn’t to be.
The former Bournemouth man would’ve been perfect for us in the second tier as that third striker behind Tati and Pablo, a proven goalscorer coming off the bench in tight gruelling matches when we need a goal.
Ww need that profile in the squad and Wilson was the only one – Wolves have managed to do it by re-signing Raul Jimenez on a free, maybe we should have been in of him too.
In terms of other free agents, there isn’t anyone else out there. Maybe Chris Wood on a cut-price deal from Nottingham Forest could be explored to replace the goals and experience of the departed Callum Wilson.
