Italian, Dutch and Portuguese players linked - Ipswich Town transfer rumour round-up

Kjell Scherpen

A 6ft 8in Dutch goalkeeper who kept 21 clean sheets for Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise last season.

Sky Sports report that the 26-year-old is 'one of the options under consideration' for the Blues.

A former Netherlands Under-21 level international, Scherpen previously had limited game time at Ajax and Brighton, the latter loaning him out four times (Oostende, Vitesse and Sturm Graz x2).

Stu's verdict: You can make a strong argument that Christian Walton deserves a chance to be Town's No.1 this season after being named Players' Player of the Year in a hard fought promotion campaign. It's now very much apparent that Ipswich, working with data specialists goalkeeper.com again, are looking to sign a new custodian though.

I understand Scherpen is one of several players on a long list. Boyhood Blues fan and former England international Nick Pope (Newcastle), Czech custodian Radek Vitek (Man United), Swede stopper Viktor Johansson (Stoke), highly-rated young Frenchman Guillaume Restes (Toulouse) and Paraguay international Orlando Gill (San Lorenzo) have also been linked.

Luca Pellegrini

Marauding Italian left-back was capped once by his country back in 2020.

He came through the youth ranks at Roma, made a €22 million switch to Serie A champions Juventus in 2019 before joining Lazio in 2023.

Having made 47 starts and 35 sub appearances for the Rome-based club over the last three seasons, the 27-year-old now heads into the final year of his contract and is said to be keen on a fresh challenge abroad.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica state that Ipswich and Hull City are among the clubs interested, along with Spanish duo Deportivo La Coruna and Espanyol.

Stu's verdict: Conor Townsend's pre-season ACL injury meant that Ben Johnson and Jacob Greaves had to act as back-up left-backs last season. It's clear that Leif Davis needs proper competition and I think it would be wise for Town to sign someone suited to a wing-back role. My understanding, however, is that Pellegrini is not someone that's been discussed.

Ipswich Town are reportedly among several clubs interesting in Sunderland's Simon Adingra.Sunderland paid £18m for Simon Adingra last summer. (Image: PA)

Simon Adingra

Ivory Coast international (who has just been at the World Cup) is a direct and tricky winger who can operate on either flank.

The 24-year-old produced 12 goals and five assists in 48 starts and 26 sub appearances for Brighton before making an £18m switch to newly-promoted Premier League club Sunderland last summer.

After limited game time for the Black Cats in the first half of the campaign, he moved to French club Monaco in January and gained good experience playing in the Champions League.

According to French journalist Sebastien Denis (Footmercato), Monaco are keen to take him back on loan. He adds that Roma (Serie A), RB Leipzig (Bundesliga), Ipswich Town and Hull City (both newly promoted to the Premier League) and West Ham (just relegated to the Championship) are all 'concretely positioned' should the wide man be made available for a permanent transfer though.

Stu's verdict: Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has hinted that Adingra's future could be elsewhere. It will be interesting to see whether they hedge their bets with another loan or try and recover a fee for someone who penned a five-year deal last summer.

If Ipswich were to sign another tricky winger there would surely be a knock on effect given that there are currently three right-sided options (Wes Burns, Kasey McAteer and Sindre Walle Egeli) and two left-siders (Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke). One would surely depart.

Jaden Philogene

Skilful left-winger was a 13-goal X-factor player in Town's recent promotion campaign.

The 24-year-old has now got a new representative in Team Raiola and Fabrizio Romano, a weaponised ally of the agents, has told his 28.1m followers on X that Philogene 'could leave Ipswich Town this summer'.

Stu's verdict: What's the motivation behind this switch of agents and media briefing? Does Philogene simply see Ipswich as a stepping stone and could he, like Omari Hutchinson before, agitate for a move away? That's all conjecture.

Ipswich are in a strong position. They're under no pressure to raise funds and Philogene still has three years left on his current deal. Personally, I hope he stays because he clearly has Premier League quality.

Gary O'Neil will need to asses where the wide man's head is at.

Claudio Braga

Fox-in-the-box forward bagged 17 goals for a Hearts side that came agonisingly close to winning the Scottish Premier League last season, subsequently being named their Player of the Year.

According to the Daily Record, it looks increasingly likely that the Portuguese front man will be sold for somewhere in the region of £8-10m. They state that Ipswich have 'entered the race' for his signature, with Lyon and Trabzonspor also interested.

Stu's verdict: It's clear Ipswich will look to add another striker to compete with new club-record signing Emersonn and the long-serving George Hirst.

I think the plan is to go for someone with a bit more experience to complement the aforementioned duo (Brentford bound Callum Wilson was a top target). My understanding is that Braga is not a player being discussed.
