There may be several names who have caught Manchester United boss Michael Carrick's eye at the World Cup. But he should take note of Sir Alex Ferguson's warning and avoid any rash signings.

Carrick is now in charge as the new Premier League campaign draws near and with Champions League football on the agenda, his squad will probably benefit from a few additions in the months ahead.

The World Cup can be a tournament that creates stars, as relatively unfamiliar names shine on football's biggest stage and are subsequently rewarded with major transfers once the competition ends.

But United and Carrick should steer clear of pursuing any of this World Cup's standout performers, as the club's greatest ever boss, Ferguson, indirectly suggested.

United are well accustomed to making snap purchases after witnessing players impress at World Cups. The most recent case perhaps being Sofyan Amrabat.

The Moroccan was amongst his nation's key figures when they progressed all the way to the semi-finals at World Cup 2022 and he subsequently joined United on an initial loan from Fiorentina. Yet he only offered fleeting glimpses of the quality he had displayed in Qatar.

The club didn't even exercise the option to sign him on a permanent basis from the Italian outfit. There are plenty of others who fall into this category and United legend Ferguson claimed following his retirement that managers should ideally steer clear of signing players straight off the back of major tournaments, pointing to two notable failures of his own.

He said: "I was always wary of buying players on the back of good tournament performances. I did it at the 1996 European Championship, which prompted me to move for Jordi Cruyff and Karel Poborsky.

"Both had excellent runs in that tournament but I didn't receive the kind of value their countries did that summer. Sometimes players get themselves motivated and prepared for World Cups and European Championships and after that there can be a levelling off."

Carrick would do well to heed the advice of his predecessor and should the chance arise to snap up a player riding high on a strong World Cup showing, he must resist the temptation.

Regardless, the squad ought to improve this summer and Carrick's message in the club's yearbook points strongly in that direction. He wrote: "We know that we need to keep improving. We have a huge responsibility here to win and play exciting football.

"That never changes, and we should always be striving to compete for the biggest trophies. There are steps to take but we are in a good place to take them.

"We've got a fantastic group of players, and we believe they have the required standards of talent, commitment and determination to be successful here.

"They love being at the club and we can see how badly they want it; that gives us the confidence to know we're really building something and moving in the right direction."
