Newcastle United have been warned that losing Bruno Guimaraes could spell trouble for Eddie Howe next season.
The Brazil international's future is far from clear, with Arsenal getting encouragement that the midfielder could be sold at the right price. Former Newcastle and Man United striker Louis Saha believes that the Magpies should be focused more on investing their sale money from Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon than making another outgoing deal.
Saha in an interview for LiveFootballTickets: "I don’t have high expectations for the club next season at this moment in time. I think the amount of players they are selling is concerning, and should worry Newcastle fans.
"One positive is they are getting large sums of money for their players, but they are seemingly becoming a selling club.
"Selling players is a two-way street as the club can’t force players who want to leave the club to stay and expect to see good results on the pitch. However, that begs the question: why do so many players want to leave the club?
"They have competed for trophies over the past few seasons and been in the Champions League, yet players still want to leave. Maybe the reason is deeper than just what we see on the pitch."
Newcastle finished 12th last season and made a major slide down the table from fifth place and Champions League contention. Now, Saha is concerned that United will even be able to hold their own next term.
He said: "I think if Newcastle want to improve or even just hold their own in the Premier League next season, then they must invest the money generated from these sales back into the squad as soon as possible.
"That’ll give the manager some time to gel his squad together, ahead of next season.
"Also, it is absolutely pivotal that they keep hold of Bruno Guimaraes, he is their best player, and he can’t be sold if Newcastle this summer. If he is sold, then we can consider Newcastle a selling club."
