The 18-year-old midfielder is the Magpies’ fourth summer signing in a deal worth £23million.

Steur spent 11 years in Amsterdam after joining from his hometown club, RKAV Volendam, as an 11-year-old before progressing through the academy to make his senior debut during the 2024-25 season.

Sean Steur issues farewell message to Ajax

Last season, Steur broke into Ajax’s first team and despite only making 26 senior appearances to date is tipped for a bright future.

“Dear Ajax,” Steur wrote on Instagram. “It is hard to write this because Ajax was my home. As a 7 year old boy I came here to play football and spent my entire childhood here. The dream to be in the Johan Cruijff Arena has come true thanks to your help and support.

“After 11 very beautiful years it's time for a new beautiful challenge. This wasn't an easy choice because Ajax means a lot to me and I will always look back with great pride on my time here.

“I want to thank everyone for this great time; my coaches, teammates, chefs and the great supporters who got me to where I am today.

“Ajax is and will always be in my heart, once Ajax player always Ajax player. Thank you, Ajax.”

Sean Steur reacts to joining Newcastle United

Steur has signed a five-year contract at Newcastle and will wear the number 14 shirt, last worn by Alexander Isak before he joined Liverpool for a British record £130million.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be here,” Steur said. “It’s a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting.

“I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it’s really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast and I’m very happy to join.

“I’m a player who likes to get on the ball and play forward all the time. I’m happy playing between the lines and I feel I have a lot of energy in my game. I just want to win.”
