Sunderland unveil unique range of 2026/27 hummel goalkeeper kits paying tribute to club icon

Sunderland have recognised the legacy of iconic goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery

Sunderland have unveiled their three goalkeeper kits for the 2026/27 campaign, a bespoke collection that pays tribute to the legacy of one of its greatest-ever players.

The three kits pay tribute to Jimmy Montgomery, one of the heroes of Sunderland’s 1973 campaign and still it’s all-time record appearance holder with 627. The home collection pays tribute to his iconic performance in that win over Leeds United at Wembley, replicating the green and red colour scheme of the kit he wore that day.

Montgomery’s signature sits at the back of the neck of all three shits, and is repeated across a yellow shirt for the away offering. The third kit is orange and features the club’s old ship crest, with 627 repeated in darker orange.

The shirts are now on sale online and in the club’s stores. The shirts are priced at £65 (adult short-sleeve), £70 (adult long-sleeve), £50 (junior short-sleeve) and £55 (junior long-sleeve).

Scott McCubbin, Sunderland’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “Jimmy Montgomery is more than a name in our history books; he's part of the fabric of this Club. This collection isn't just a tribute to what he achieved; it's a statement about what we expect from every goalkeeper who wears our shirt. We wanted this launch to carry the weight of that legacy, and we think it does."

The kits mark the club’s wider efforts to recognise Montgomery’s contribution to the club, after the West Stand was renamed The Jimmy Montgomery stand ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Sunderland have also commissioned a new statue of Montgomery to sit at the end of Legend’s Way, and it is expected to be installed sometime in early 2027. Bob Stokoe’s statue will be moved to sit alongside Montgomery’s, in a nod to the iconic images as the pair ran to each other in celebration following the win in 1973.
