'Nastiness' - legend gives verdict on Gray after Leeds loan move

The Owls snapped up talented striker from Leeds United earlier this week

Harry Gray has been backed to be a success at Sheffield Wednesday.

The teenage striker, just 17, has joined on a season loan from Leeds United. He has an excellent record at youth level and his first experience of senior football on loan at Rotherham United in League One last term went well despite the Millers’ struggles.

The forward has been training with The Owls at St George’s Park this week and a video of him scoring goals in a training drill impressed his team-mates, with Liam Palmer singing his name in response. Gray is likely to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly against West Brom on Saturday.

Mel Sterland, a legend at Wednesday and Leeds, has seen enough of Gray to know that he is a talent.

“Seriously, the kid can play,” Sterland told The Star via TopFootballBettingSites.co.uk. “He's a good footballer. He can play up front. He can drop into midfield. He's got that bit of nastiness in him. He doesn’t mind putting his foot in. He'll do well at Hillsborough and the fans will love him. The fans will love him because he puts himself about and can score goals.”

Expectations will be high at Wednesday when the new league season kicks-off next month, starting away at Leyton Orient, but Sterland believes Gray will be able to handle the pressure.

He added: “I think by scoring early on, scoring on his debut would be great, wouldn't it? He gets into some great positions, and he's not afraid to have a shot wherever he is. For a 17-year-old kid, he's got plenty of potential.”
