Leeds United have confirmed a new two-year contract for one of Daniel Farke's senior squad.
The goalkeeping department is where most of the summer transfer intrigue lies at Leeds United during this window but the club have confirmed the future of one stopper. Alex Cairns, who was brought back to the club where his career began in 2024 in order to fulfil the role of third keeper, has signed a new contract at Elland Road.
A club statement confirmed: "Leeds United are pleased to announce goalkeeper Alex Cairns has signed a new contract with the club, extending his time at Elland Road until 2028. The 33-year-old has penned a two-year deal which will see him continue his longstanding association with the Whites and remain an experienced part of the first-team squad.
" Having played through the age groups in the academy, the Yorkshire-born goalkeeper made his debut for Leeds in the 2011/12 campaign, before leaving to continue his career elsewhere in 2015 after a number of productive loans. The stopper returned to the club from Salford City in the summer of 2024, re-joining the Whites after playing every single league fixture for the Ammies in the previous season. Cairns’ wealth of experience will carry on benefitting Daniel Farke’s squad, having amassed over 300 career matches and continuing to be an ever-present on a matchday with the first team squad. Alex is also a valued member of the community, regularly appearing at and engaging with different Leeds United Foundation sessions to promote wellbeing and social activity. Having agreed new terms, Cairns joins captain Ethan Ampadu in committing their futures at Elland Road with new contracts this summer. Everyone at Leeds United is delighted that Alex has signed a new deal and we look forward to seeing him continuing to excel in his role."
Illan Meslier has joined Arsenal as a free agent since running down his contract with Leeds while Karl Darlow, who took over the number one spot from Lucas Perri last season, is close to confirming a move to Manchester United. The Wales international is out of contract after three years at Elland Road and turned down the chance to remain at Elland Road. The YEP understands Leeds could not guarantee the veteran would be their number one, with plans to bring in another senior keeper this summer.
