Leeds United must ignore inevitable lazy link to underwhelming English transfer: View

Leeds United are now actively in the market to find a new goalkeeper with Karl Darlow heading to Old Trafford imminently.

The Whites have been forced to wait on the goalkeeper front at the start of July. Karl Darlow’s expired contract was a key priority to get sorted, as the club confirmed he was subject to ongoing talks.

However, the 49ers are now forced into exploring the goalkeeper market as Darlow heads to a very unpopular destination.

Karl Darlow agrees Man Utd move as Leeds United now dive into goalkeeper transfer market

You would imagine that Leeds have already drawn up a shortlist for a new goalkeeper, given the indecision previously from Darlow.

Now, the Wales international is heading to Old Trafford, as confirmed on Thursday afternoon by various outlets.

It sees Leeds lose our starting goalkeeper from the second half of our successful Premier League survival bid. And therefore, the hunt to replace him sufficiently begins now.

A whole host of names have been linked with Leeds, some of them reliable, some of them far from it. What is clear, though, is that United have a great opportunity to replace Darlow with a long-term successor that can allow us to stop having to consider overhauling the No1 spot every season.

Leeds United must ignore any Aaron Ramsdale noise as goalkeeper position becomes priority

As I mentioned above, there are going to be names thrown at Leeds that are viable options. There are also going to be names that we shoudl be categorically avoiding.

One of those that you can put your house on being linked with Leeds soon is England international Aaron Ramsdale.

Currently back at Southampton for pre-season after another underwhelming loan, this time with Newcastle United, the 28-year-old could be on the move.

It’s unlikely that Ramsdale wants to sit in the Championship. Meanwhile, the Saints won’t start him, given the very popular Daniel Peretz has signed permanently.

So, expect Ramsdale to be linked with any bottom-half Premier League club that’s in the market for a goalkeeper. That includes Leeds, no doubt, from the usual ‘sources’.

However, there’s been nothing from Ramsdale’s last few seasons that suggests he’s remotely close to what Leeds need.

Darlow was a commanding, calming presence in our box that also produced some marvellous saves. Ramsdale, though, has routinely been seen as a flashy, yet inconsistent shot-stopper that hasn’t really developed that much since being a perennially-relegated youngster with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Again, so far it’s not a transfer that’s even speculated outside of the odd fan online saying ‘hear me out’. But, it’s a player that should be nowhere near our shortlist.
