Leeds United have been dealt a couple of major blows so far in the summer transfer window.
Pascal Struijk’s move to Brighton has left a massive hole in the left side of the Whites’ defence.
Whilst Leeds were also unable to come to terms with Karl Darlow on a new contract. The Welsh shot stopper is now on the verge of moving to our bitter rivals, Manchester United.
This move has obviously not gone down well with supporters on social media. Understandably, the 35-year-old’s legacy at Elland Road is now ruined.
Karl Darlow ruins his reputation with Leeds United fans after Man United move
Whilst Darlow is not regarded as a legend at Leeds, he would have been remembered fondly if he had moved on to another club this summer, not named Man United or ended up staying at Leeds.
He provided stability during the backend of our promotion-winning campaign when Illan Meslier was out of form. Daniel Farke also had to rely on him once again last season after Lucas Perri struggled to adapt.
But following his move to Man United, all of this good work has been ruined.
If Darlow had stayed at Leeds, there’s every chance he could’ve remained our number one going into next season.
But instead, he’s traded that for a paycheque, knowing he will rarely feature at Man United.
At his age as well, it’s not like he has all the time in the world to be sitting on the bench. Darlow’s move to Man United evidently shows that he has no intention of regularly playing football ever again in his career.
Leeds United now potentially need two goalkeepers this summer
With Perri also being the subject of interest from Torino, Leeds could potentially need to sign two goalkeepers this summer.
Following Darlow’s departure, they certainly need to sign at least one.
If a new goalie is brought in on the cheap, that could hint at the fact that Perri is being given a second chance at Leeds to be the first choice should he stay.
But if we fork out big money on a James Trafford, for example, you would imagine that means Perri will remain a backup option. Or instead, we may sell him so another backup ‘keeper can come in.
The 49ers certainly have a dilemma on their hands. How they handle the goalkeeping situation could certainly have a major impact on how well Farke’s team does next season.
After celebrating with the Leeds fans after their famous win at Old Trafford back in April, Darlow will certainly not be serenaded by those same fans again when the two sides meet next season. Deservedly so too.
