Leeds United have been linked with multiple goalkeepers who have featured at the World Cup.
The most exciting addition out of the ‘keepers who have been linked would undoubtedly be Japan’s Zion Suzuki. Even though with Suzuki, there are plenty of contradictory reports regarding his potential move to Elland Road.
Sweden’s Jacob Widell Zetterstrom has been another name linked with Leeds. However, it wouldn’t be an addition that would tremendously raise the ceiling of our squad, you would imagine. At 27, Widell Zetterstrom currently plays his football at Derby in the Championship.
Another goalie Leeds have been loosely linked with is Norway’s Orjan Nyland. However, this move appears to have been ruled out according to the latest reports.
Orjan Nyland’s move to Leeds ruled out
Leeds were recently tipped to sign Nyland by former Man United chief scout Mick Brown when speaking to Football Insider.
However, this move now appears to be unlikely.
According to Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, United are unlikely to pursue a deal for Nyland, who is currently a free agent.
Nyland is now 35 and a free agent after his contract at Sevilla expired. But he is said to be attracting the interest of clubs across Europe due to his impressive World Cup campaign.
But Leeds are said not to be one of the clubs near the front of the queue fighting for his signature.
The report goes on to claim that Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford are some of the goalkeepers Leeds are actively looking at this summer.
Orjan Nyland news is hardly a surprise
With Karl Darlow recently leaving, the last thing we needed to do was to replace him with another 35-year-old in Nyland.
This wouldn’t have made any sense whatsoever.
At this stage, the goalkeeper position at Leeds feels cursed. For as long as I can remember being a supporter, there’s always been one issue or another with whoever we play in goal.
This summer, it has to change.
If we’re serious about establishing ourselves as a Premier League outfit, a strong goalkeeper is one of the positions we should prioritise.
So with Darlow gone, I’d be looking to move Lucas Perri on this summer too.
Then a new backup and first-choice goalkeeper need to be brought in by the 49ers as soon as possible.
