Manchester United have turned their attention to signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao, according to Brazilian outlet Globo.
The Red Devils have already secured the signature of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, and he is expected to join the club in the next 24 hours.
United were also fancied to sign Ederson from Atalanta, but reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the club have pulled out of the deal.
Globo now add that the Red Devils have switched their attention to Gomes.
The Brazil international was initially tipped to join Atletico Madrid last month, but a £38 million move collapsed due to agent Jorge Mendes’ decision.
Mendes had initially planned to bring both Gomes and Bernardo Silva to Atletico, but the latter surprisingly ended up joining Madrid instead.
This reportedly infuriated Atletico, who pulled the plug on the deal for Gomes. The La Liga giants have chosen to sign Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand instead.
United and Liverpool have now established fresh contact for Gomes, who is widely expected to leave Wolves after their Premier League relegation last term.
Gomes could emerge as an Ederson alternative
United are about to confirm the purchase of Santos. The 22-year-old has similar attributes to Ederson, with his ball-carrying ability and forward distribution.
With the club having cancelled a verbal agreement for Ederson, the focus could shift towards signing a more defensive midfielder ahead of the new season.
In that case, Gomes would be a good cost-effective solution. Despite Wolves finishing at the bottom of the table, the 25-year-old fared well in the heart of the midfield.
Gomes won almost seven duels per league appearance with six recoveries. He also registered three tackles per outing with a passing accuracy of 86 percent.
His statistics are quite impressive, given Wolves commanded the third-lowest league possession last term behind West Ham United and Burnley at just 42.6 percent.
At £38m, Gomes would represent a good acquisition, given his vast Premier League experience. He could be seen as a direct competitor to Santos for the number six role.
