NUFC agree deal with brother of current first-team star

Newcastle United have another Miley progressing through their academy ranks.

Mason Miley, the younger brother of Lewis, has signed his first professional contract at Newcastle United.

The 17-year-old midfielder joined the Magpies at under-9 level and has progressed through the academy ranks, making his under-21s debut last season.

Mason becomes the third Miley brother to sign a pro deal with United after Lewis and Jamie.

Lewis, who has made 50 senior appearances for Newcastle, signed a new six-year contract in May, while Jamie played in a handful of first-team friendlies before leaving to join National League side Hartlepool United in January last year.

Lewis Miley’s brother Mason signs pro contract at Newcastle United

"Lewis and Jamie have been through it and are both in the professional game," Mason told the club’s website. "Lewis is in Newcastle's first-team so, hopefully, I can follow in his footsteps in the future.

"My family have been a massive help, making sure we all keep going and they've always tried to get the best out of us.

"To play with Lewis in a Newcastle United shirt for the first team is one of my ultimate goals. It would be an unreal moment for the family.

"We've been training together during the summer and he has helped me to maintain strong fitness levels and standards, which will help so that I'm ready for when I return for pre-season.”

Mason added: "I was delighted to get it signed a bit earlier after a good season and it's a proud moment after being at the club from such a young age.

"It is my boyhood club and I like the way the club is going forward. We are wanting to compete in the biggest competitions, the Champions League, and I really wanted to be here.”

Mason Miley could feature in Newcastle United pre-season friendlies

Mason may get the opportunity to be around Eddie Howe’s squad in the early part of pre-season with several players given extended breaks following their involvement at the World Cup.

One position the Magpies are currently light in is right-back. Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth are no longer at the club, while Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley are expected back later into pre-season as they recover from their respective injuries.

Mason, like Lewis, is a midfielder but is capable of playing at right-back.

"During the off-season, I've been able to take the time reflect on how good of a season it has been for me,” Mason continued. “It doesn't feel real.

"I had a good breakthrough season in my first year of full-time football after the school programme. I think I kicked on at the start of the season, training with the first-team a few times and making a number of appearances for the under-21s, so I thought I impressed and want to keep pushing on.

"I'll be aiming to have another good season with the U21s and try to train with the first-team as much as possible, impressing the staff, and hopefully make an appearance in the matchday squad.

"In the long-term, it would be trying to get on the bench and making my debut for this club because that would mean a lot to me and my family."
