Newcastle United and England star Dan Burn is ready to step up if Marc Guehi cannot feature against Norway tonight.
Marc Guehi is nursing a hamstring problem ahead of England’s quarter-final clash against Norway.
And if he misses the World Cup encounter, Dan Burn is waiting in the wings to take his place. Guehi has started all but one - the opener versus Croatia - of England’s clashes at the tournament so far.
He has partnered Aston Villa defender Ezro Konsa at the heart of the Three Lions defence. However, a slight hamstring strain suffered in the thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico has raised concerns.
Dan Burn to start?
England are not short of options at centre-back if Guehi misses the Norway clash. John Stones is vastly experienced at international level and helped see out the Mexico win.
Trevoh Chalobah - drafted into the squad as a late replacement for Tino Livramento - has not played at the World Cup. But the big decision could be whether to start Newcastle United favourite Burn.
The 34-year-old has become a national hero after his spirited display from the bench last weekend. With a stellar record against Erling Haaland - just one goal conceded in eight meetings - England fans have called for Burn to start tonight.
‘I know what I’m good at’ - Dan Burn
Burn is the remaining Newcastle player left at the World Cup. Before the tournament, some England fans questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to take him.
Having now justified his selection, Burn said pre-match: “I understand people's opinion, but the only people's opinions I care about are the manager's and my teammates. But I think that was nice as well, because I think until you get on the pitch and you show people what you can do, I feel like you probably earn that little bit of respect from it as well.
“I came to the tournament knowing that I wasn't going to start. I'd had the conversations with the manager, but I also know what I'm good at. I knew there were going to be opportunities where I could come and make a difference, so I'm just happy that I could do that.”
