Leeds United are in ongoing talks with Southampton over the signing of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles this summer.
United have one signing over the line after the confirmation of Harry Wilson’s arrival on a free transfer. However, it’s not enough to have fans totally satisfied as we clamour for more.
Shea Charles is the next name everyone’s wanting to hear updates about. Southampton have proven stubborn so far, but the latest is a major boost for Leeds.
Shea Charles wants Leeds United move as Southampton talks continue this weekend
The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones has been first to the updates throughout this Charles to Leeds saga. And now, the same source has relayed a major update on Leeds’ pursuit.
He claims that the Northern Ireland international wants to make the move from St Mary’s to Elland Road this July, while talks continue.
Importantly, after Leeds’ most recent £23million-plus-add-ons was seemingly knocked back, it looks as though the Whites are aiming to strike a compromise this weekend.
“Leeds United hope to find out this weekend if they have been successful in their pursuit of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles,” Jones wrote.
“Talks were understood to be positive as they tried to strike a compromise on Friday.”
There’s of course interest from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Fulham. But, the midfielder only wants Leeds at this stage.
“At least Charles wants to join. Leeds have offered Southampton £23million plus add-ons and believe the Northern Ireland international can grow into a top midfielder,” Jones continued.
“Crystal Palace and Fulham, plus one other Premier League side, also hold interest but the focus for Charles is on Leeds.
“Should a deal falter with Southampton pushing for £30m, Leeds would explore alternatives but despite links with Parma’s Mandela Keita, he is not understood to be an option.”
Leeds United need to turn the screw with Shea Charles in July
I maintain the fact that Charles shouldn’t be a priority for Leeds.
We don’t really need a new midfielder this summer, given our depth, but Charles would be welcome, because he’s simply that talented that you make room for him.
£30million is quite steep, but there’s every chance that this money proves a bargain in the near future. Take Elliot Anderson for example, Nottingham Forest paid what looked a hefty £35million for him and that was dwarfed by his sale to Manchester City.
Leeds clearly view Charles as an opportunity too good to pass up, and you can’t blame the club for thinking this. Everyone speaks so highly of him and how talented he is, and even if he initially joins as Ethan Ampadu’s understudy, it could be a savvy investment.
