Newcastle United were interested in Abdukodir Khusanov before his big-money move to Manchester City.
Abdukodir Khusanov’s agent has hailed Newcastle United and predicted an Uzbek star to join the club one day.
Toon chiefs were interested in signing the Manchester City defender 18 months ago. However, Newcastle’s preference was to conclude a summer transfer due to PSR restrictions.
City ultimately swept in to secure a £33million deal as Pep Guardiola looked towards the future. Khusanov endured a tricky start at the Etihad but showed promising signs in his first full season at the club.
Abdukodir Khusanov agent speaks out
Speaking to Russian outlet Sport Express, Khusanov’s agent, Gairat Khasbiullin, praised the Toon hierarchy for their “warm” approach. When asked if any other clubs wanted the defender, he said: “Newcastle. The others may have shown interest, just like many other teams. It never got to the point of concrete talks.
“But we established a great rapport with the Magpies. I have great respect for their management, and they were the first to congratulate us on Khusanov’s move to City. We maintain a warm relationship with them. I think that someday a player from Uzbekistan will end up at Newcastle.”
Box offered at St James’ Park
“In general, I try to get along well with everyone I’ve negotiated with, sending holiday greetings and congratulations on important victories,” Khasbiullin added. “When I travel to England, we have dinner together.
“Yes, that deal didn’t go through, but they really wanted him (Khusanov), and no one held a grudge. They say, ‘Whenever you’re planning to visit us, just give us a call in advance, and a box at St James’ Park is at your disposal’. I have the same kind of relationship with Lens and PSG.”
