Newcastle United have been keen on Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas this summer.
Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany that the Magpies are the hottest lead for him.
Newcastle United have also made a €12m bid, while the Bundesliga side are requesting €15m.
Update on Newcastle United’s reported offer
Sky Deutschland relays these claims and shares their own updates on the 28-year-old’s future.
They waste no time to dismiss claims of Newcastle United’s €12m proposal, as ‘no such offer’ has arrived at Borussia Mönchengladbach. In fact, there’s no bid at all on the table, from Eddie Howe’s side for Moritz Nicolas.
Sky further adds the 28-year-old’s release clause is no longer in effect, without a mention of their details. Last month, we relayed news of the stopper’s €10m clause valid until June.
This allows the Bundesliga side to negotiate a fee for the German, if Newcastle United or another club were to make advances.
However, there’s no mention of the transfer fee, while an earlier claim said Gladbach want at least €15m for him. Nicolas has a contract until 2029, and Transfermarkt value him at €8m.
Why summer move is highly unlikely
Moritz Nicolas initially joined the German club’s youth team in 2015 and made his way into their first team a year later. However, he didn’t enjoy regular game time and had loan spells between 2019 and 2023.
Since then, the stopper has enjoyed regular game time. He’s played 88 matches, keeping 22 clean sheets and conceding 138 goals, and 37 were from last season.
The goalkeeper wore No.33 on his back and Bild now claims he will change it to No.1. This would indicate Nicolas is likely to continue with the Bundesliga side.
Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder is happy with Nicolas’ latest change.
“Mo has developed exceptionally well in recent seasons, not only on the pitch, but also in terms of his personality. He already started the 2025/26 season as our No. 1 goalkeeper. The fact that he’s now also switching to No.1 on his jersey makes his high standing with us even more apparent,” he added.
