Youth international centre-back signs two-year Leeds United deal

A youth international defender has signed a Leeds United deal.

Youth international centre-back Luke Matykiewicz has signed his first professional contract with Leeds United.

Matykiewicz, 18, began last season playing for United’s under-21s before progressing to Scott Gardner’s under-21s for whom he played eight times.

Last season also the teenager make his debut for Northern Ireland’s under-21s in November’s 1-0 win against Malta and two more outings for the country’s under-21s followed in March against Romania and Kazakhstan.

Fresh from a fine season, the defender has now signed his first professional deal with Leeds, penning terms on a two year contract that runs until 2028.

A Leeds United statement read: “Leeds United are pleased to announce Academy defender Luke Matykiewicz has signed a first professional contract with the club.

“The centre-back’s two-year deal will keep him within the ranks at Thorp Arch until 2028 as he continues his development in Scott Gardner’s Under-21s.

“After beginning last term with the U18s, the 18-year-old stepped up to the U21s fold where he went on to play eight times, including in a 3-0 National League Cup victory over Gateshead.

“On the international front, Matykiewicz has been capped three times by Northern Ireland at youth level, beginning with a debut win against Malta U19s.

“Earlier this year, the defender followed that maiden appearance up with two more starts for Northern Ireland’s U19s, helping the side to clean sheets in meetings with Romania and Kazakhstan.

“Everyone at Leeds United would like congratulate Luke and we look forward to seeing his continued development with the Whites.”
