Another goalkeeper? Newcastle United 'submit' £10m offer for 28 y/o Bundesliga talent

The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as the Magpies are linked with a Bundesliga goalkeeper.

There have been conflicting claims over Newcastle United’s reported interest in Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas.

The Magpies have already added to their keeper ranks during the January transfer window after completing a deal for France Under-21s star Ewen Jaouen last month. However, the departures of loan signing Aaron Ramsdale and veteran John Ruddy mean another goalkeeper is likely to arrive before the window closes for business. The need for another option between the sticks will be further heightened if Ipswich Town intensify their reported interest in current Magpies number one Nick Pope.

Although the Magpies are expected to make a third attempt to land Manchester City and England goalkeeper James Trafford once the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign comes to a close, reports in Germany have suggested United maintain an interest in Monchengladbach star Nicolas. The 28-year-old has established himself as the Bundesliga club’s first-choice keeper over the last two seasons after spending time out on loan with the likes of Roda JC, Viktoria Koln and Union Berlin.

German outlet Bild have now claimed Newcastle have submitted an offer of around €12m for the 28-year-old after considering an offer for Besitkas-bound Alexander Nubel. They also state the offer is ‘nowhere near enough’ for Gladbach to consider - and director of football Rouven Schröder has already given his stance over what could lie ahead.

He is quoted as saying: “We will certainly be holding further talks with players who are due to leave us. But Mo is an integral part of our plans for the new season. The transfer window is still open for a long time yet; you can’t rule anything out,”

He posted on X: “Rumours linking Newcastle with Moritz Nicolas are currently wide of the mark. No talks. No negotiations. No interest registered. There is also no €12m offer on the table. Ross Wilson and Rouven Schröder have known and respected each other for years, and they are currently not in contact regarding Nicolas.”
