Coventry City kick-off pre-season programme with behind-closed-doors friendly in Spain

Coventry City today kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 3-2 defeat to AFC Wimbledon in Spain.

The Sky Blues fielded two different outfield sides for the behind-closed-doors fixture against the League One outfit which concludes Frank Lampard’s squad’s week-long training camp in Marbella.

Norman Bassette and Milan Van Ewijk scored for City on a day when there was no Ephron Mason-Clark, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Jack Rudoni, Miguel Brau and Oliver Dovin.

Rudoni, of course, may well still be recovering from his shoulder surgery. Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante, meanwhile, are understood to be taking some time off following their World Cup duty with USA and Ghana, respectively.

Early pre-season run-outs are all about fitness rather than results, and the game will have come at the end of a gruelling week of work on the training pitch and in the gym with plenty of sore and fatigued muscles.

City are due back at Ryton this week and face Northampton Town at Sixfield next Saturday (2pm).

First-Half XI: Wilson, Kesler-Hayden, Woolfenden, Kitching, Batanwi, Dasilva, Perry, Onyeka, Eccles, Andrews, Simms.

Second-Half XI: Wilson, Van Ewijk, Latibeaudiere, Thomas, Bidwell, Raphael, Grimes, Torp, Betjemann, Andrews, Bassette.
