Ex-Albion star reveals he is facing major heart surgery for a second time

The former Albion defender says he is a little scared and nervous about the operation to ease problems caused by an enlarged aorta.

He had a similar operation nine years ago during his time with the Seagulls and recovered to help them in the Premier League before moving to Scottish giants Rangers.

Goldson recently parted company with Cypriot cub Aris Limassol and was set to move across the city to rivals Apollon.

However, all thoughts now are on an operation which will be similar to that he underwent after routine medical tests first showed up the issue when he was playing for Albion in the Championship.

Goldson has described his second operation, which will take place on Tuesday, as “round two”.

He posted on social media: “It’s strange how quickly life can change.

“Ten days ago, I was preparing for yet another pre-season. Today, I’m preparing for anther operation.

“Over the last ten days, I have felt every emotion imaginable.

“For the first time, my children saw me cry and, as a family, we all cried together.

“At first, I was told my football career might be over and that I would need another operation.

“I’ll be honest, I was angry. I kept asking myself, ‘Why me?’.

“After everything I sacrificed, every early morning, every training session, every setback I fought through, why did I have to face this again?

“Then the memories came back. The pain, the recovery, the learning to trust my body again.

“Nine years ago feels like another lifetime but suddenly it all became real again.

“Part of me is calm because I have done this before and the other part of me is scared because I know exactly what is waiting for me.

“But then I looked at it differently. This operation isn’t taking anything away from me, It’s giving me more time.

“Two routine heart scans nine years apart could have saved my life and for that I will always be grateful.”

Goldson has since been told his football career is not over but he says the way he sees his life has moved on since his first operation.

He added: “I am living the life I once dreamed of.

“I have an incredible wife, three beautiful children, I have played in the Premier League, Europa League, Champions League. I have won trophies.

“I have played more games than I ever imagined I would after my first operation and for all of that I am incredibly grateful.”
