Football Insider: Path clear for Newcastle to swoop for Milan defender Howe wants

Fikayo Tomori continues to be linked with a return to the Premier League, with Newcastle United the latest suitors linked.

Tomori has been at Milan for over half a decade now, but numerous sources have suggested that his time at the club may well be coming to an end, especially after the signing of Mario Gila was confirmed on Friday for a fee of €30m.

Newcastle tempted by Tomori

According to Football Insider, Milan are ‘open’ to letting Tomori leave and Newcastle are aware of this. Tomori has ‘been a long-time target for Eddie Howe’ and is now ‘set to leave the San Siro’ ahead of next season. Coventry have also been mentioned as having an interest.

Newcastle were actually linked with the Englishman last year as well as other clubs, but Tomori chose to stay and fight for a starting spot under Massimiliano Allegri. Now, with his deal up in June 2027 and no renewal in sight, a crossroads has emerged.

As such, the Rossoneri have made Tomori ‘available for sale before this summer window closes’. The 27-year-old is ‘on the radar of several clubs across Europe’ but a return to the Premier League seems to be a preferred option.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, Pete O’Rourke explained: “If Eddie Howe wants to strengthen his defensive options, Tomori I’m sure is somebody who would figure on his wanted list.

“I think there’ll be a number of clubs, Premier League sides, probably other European sides too, that would be interested in Tomori, as it does seem that Milan would be willing to cash in on him. So look, it’ll be a pretty open race for tomorrow if Milan do open the doors for him.”
