Controversy continues to surround Manchester United’s move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
United had agreed a deal for Ederson last month, but transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims the deal is now off. However, sources at the club insist otherwise.
Man United have now identified Roma ace Manu Kone as an alternative to Ederson. They have reportedly held talks with Kone’s representatives.
United are ready to submit a €50 million bid ( £35m at current rates) for the France international, according to Sport Mediaset.
Arsenal and Newcastle United are also said to be interested in the France-born midfielder.
Roma are open to selling Kone to comply with financial regulations, raising United’s hopes of signing the Toulouse academy graduate.
Kone impressed for Roma last season. He has carried that form onto the international stage, helping France reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
The 25-year-old outshone another United target, Ayyoub Bouaddi, in France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Although naturally a central midfielder, Kone can also be operate as a defensive midfielder and as a No.10.
His versatility makes him a good fit for United. The club’s recruitment team, led by Christopher Vivell are reportedly prioritising ‘highly technical midfielders’ and not naturally defensive ones.
The Mancunian giants would benefit from his physicality, which largely enables him to excel in duels and evade challenges while carrying the ball.
His passing ability would also help United in breaking down the opposition’s defence.
Kone still has to contribute more in the final third, having scored just two Serie A goals last term, but his strengths suggest he could be a good signing for United.
