'World collapsed' - Aston Villa star opens up on injury hell

The midfielder is facing a long spell on the sidelines.

Villa midfielder Amadou Onana has vowed to return stronger after initially feeling his “world had collapsed” when he suffered a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old admitted his first emotion was anger when he realised the extent of the injury which will likely cause him to miss most of the season.

Onana tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when playing for Belgium at the World Cup.

But the £50million man claims to have quickly shaken off feelings of self-pity and is now focused on making the best recovery possible.

Onana wrote on social media: “I am more confident than ever in the fact that this experience will make me grow as an athlete, a human being, a father, a husband and many other ways.

“I truly believe everything happens for a reason and this is what Allah had planned for me.

“Whatever is meant for me will never miss me and whatever misses me was never meant for me.”

Recalling the moment he suffered the injury, he wrote: “From the second I hit the floor my whole world collapsed. I knew something bad had happened.

“My first thoughts were, why me? Why now? Why did I deserve this?

“I was angry at the world, not knowing what to expect but also sad because I wouldn’t be able to do what I loved the most for a very long time.”

Onana’s injury may force Villa to alter their plans for the transfer window by recruiting a replacement midfielder.

Preparations for the new season will ramp up on Monday when those players who did not feature in the World Cup report back to Bodymoor Heath. Villa play their first friendly at Walsall on July 21.
