Eddie Howe could have a completely new-look midfield at Newcastle United next season following Sandro Tonali's departure.
The Italian joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £100 million deal, and he might not be the last high-profile name to depart St James' Park. Arsenal are reportedly expected to start formal talks to sign Bruno Guimaraes, who has told the Magpies he wants to join the Gunners.
It's been a difficult start to the window for the Tyneside outfit, but they have set their sights on plenty of midfielders. One of them is Freiburg's Johan Manzambi, who starred at the World Cup, and he looks increasingly likely to join.
Man Utd Pave Way For Newcastle to Swoop For Ederson
Ederson
Manzambi is still only 20 and might not be viewed as Tonali's direct replacement. The recruitment team are exploring other options, including Atalanta's Ederson.
According to Sportmediaset's Orazio Accomando, Ederson remains on the market after Manchester United pulled out of a deal for the Brazilian. The Red Devils decided against completing the transfer due to a "communication of unsatisfactory medical visits."
This has seemingly alerted Newcastle as ones to "keep an eye on" in the race for Ederson. He has a year left on his contract with Atalanta, who are set to propose a renewal. He looked certain to make the switch to Old Trafford with a £39 million deal agreed since May.
Now that it has fallen through, it could pave the way for the Magpies to swoop for the 27-year-old. His profile is similar to Tonali's, and he's full of energy, constantly pressing the opposition.
It appears that the Italians still value Ederson, who has been described as the 'strongest DM in the world', at around the same price Manchester United agreed to pay for him. That is a reasonable price for a player who ticks plenty of boxes for Howe's side.

Newcastle headed into the summer transfer window knowing a major squad overhaul was needed. A 12th-placed finish means there will be no European football at St James' Park next season.
Ederson is the type of player who can help get the Magpies back to challenging for Europe. He has been one of Atalanta's best performers over the years, playing an important role in their Europa League win back in 2024.
