Leeds United keeping tabs on Premier League free agent ahead of potential transfer

Leeds United have secured some impressive free transfers upon their return to the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a prime example of this. United did not have to pay a transfer fee for the striker who turned out to be Daniel Farke’s talisman last season.

Lukas Nmecha was also secured on a free too, with the German proving to be a valuable squad player. This summer, Harry Wilson has arrived on a free, with the Welshman adding immense quality in the final third for Leeds.

But United may not be done there. Recent reports have suggested that another free agent could soon be joining Wilson at Elland Road this summer.

Leeds United eye potential move for Matt Targett this summer

It was clear that going into the summer, Leeds needed more cover at left-back. Now, the 49ers look set to bolster Farke’s options in that position before the new season.

Gabriel Gudmundsson is the only senior left-footed full-back at the club, and, as well as James Justin covered for him at points last season, we need a more natural replacement.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Matt Targett is one of the players who has been proposed to add that much-needed depth at left-back.

Targett, 30, is available as a free agent this summer after leaving Newcastle. The Englishman spent last year on loan at Middlesbrough, featuring in all but one of their Championship fixtures.

However, West Ham and Norwich are also said to be interested in the full-back. Discussions between those two clubs and Targett described as “ongoing”.

Naturally, as a result of this, Leeds are also assessing other options, but they are not named in this report.

Matt Targett would be a solid addition as cover

If we could secure Targett’s services, on paper it would be a solid addition.

By no means would it be one that would keep Gudmundsson up at night. The Swede would clearly remain the first choice in that position.

Prior to his loan move to Middlesbrough, Targett had been used to playing second fiddle at Newcastle for multiple seasons.

So, if he wants to get back to playing regularly, we will certainly not be able to guarantee him any game time. That is where Norwich or West Ham could potentially get ahead of us in any negotiations.

Realistically, we’re not in the position to break the bank on a backup left-back. We need a cost-efficient option who would know his role, and Targett certainly fits the bill.

Other areas of the squad need significant investment, so securing a player with bags of Premier League experience to be Gudmundsson’s deputy would be a shrewd acquisition from the 49ers.
