Suzuki alternative: Leeds surge into the race to sign "spectacular" World Cup star on free…

Leeds United want to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with Karl Darlow in line to join Premier League rivals Manchester United.

It has been widely reported that Man United are set to sign Darlow, who was Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper for large parts of the 2025-26 season, as Lucas Perri failed to make the desired impact.

Zion Suzuki has emerged as a major target for Daniel Farke's side, and a contract offer has already been submitted to the Japan star, who started all of his side's World Cup games prior to their round of 32 exit at the hands of Brazil.

However, an alternative option has now entered the frame.

Leeds enter the race to sign Zion Suzuki alternative

According to a report from Football Insider, Leeds have stormed into contention to sign Norway star Orjan Nyland, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Sevilla.

Transfer correspondent Pete O'Rourke added: "He's done his chances no harm at all of securing a big money contract and move away because of his World Cup exploits.

"But I think probably for Leeds if they're looking to bring in new number one they'll probably have other targets ahead of Nyland."

How Orjan Nyland performed for Norway at the World Cup

Norway surpassed expectations at the World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals, but England crushed their hopes of reaching the semi-final for the first time in their history with a 2-1 victory after extra-time in the blistering Miami heat.

Nyland was given the nod between the sticks, as he has for every other game, barring the final group stage match against France, but he spilled Morgan Rogers' long-distance effort in extra-time, which led to Jude Bellingham's second goal.

That said, while the veteran goalkeeper made a costly error, he made six saves throughout the match, while also saving a penalty against Brazil in the round of 16.

As such, Nyland, who was lauded as "spectacular" by reporter Joe Crann, could still have a lot left to give at the top level, and his availability without a transfer fee makes him an attractive option for Leeds.
