Newcastle United could have been dealt a hammer blow on Switzerland ace Johan Manzambi.
Chronicle Live understands that Aston Villa have muscled in on the SC Freiburg star and hope to complete a deal for the 20-year-old.
It is believed that Villa must first tidy up their own financial situation before pushing the button the deal.
Newcastle chiefs held positive talks with Manzambi last week and were given positive vibes, including a verbal agreement on wages and the deal with the Bundesliga club.
But he would not commit when asked to sign the deal on paper last week.
This made Newcastle wonder if he was having doubts and despite having a long window to consider his options the lines of communication have fallen silent.
Newcastle do have other targets in mind but are disappointed this deal could fall through.
It means history has repeated itself and for the second time this summer Newcastle have been denied at the final stages.
Just like the Victor Munoz deal, after the Spaniard said yes verbally but wouldn’t sign a contract, Manzambi appears to have also given his word to Villa and Newcastle expect him to go there as things stand.
