The 16-year-old has now left Arsenal as a free agent.
Tottenham have missed out on Kyran Thompson. Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Saturday that the 16-year-old England Under-17 winger has agreed to join Newcastle United, leaving Arsenal as a free agent after choosing the Magpies from five competing proposals. Spurs had reached an agreement in principle for Thompson’s signature and appeared to be in the driving seat, but Newcastle intervened at the final hour and turned his head.

Thompson joined Arsenal from West Ham in 2024 and quickly established himself as one of the more coveted young attackers in the country. Tottenham had made a serious push for him two years ago when he left West Ham, per HotspurReports, and revived that interest this summer with what looked like a conclusive move. It did not hold.
What Tottenham lose and what Newcastle gain from Kyran Thompson
Thompson traveled to Tyneside on July 8 to undergo his medical ahead of putting pen to paper. The deal is expected to be formally wrapped up swiftly, with only administrative details remaining. Newcastle’s scholarship package and their sporting project were enough to convince a teenager who had multiple options and could have gone anywhere.
For Spurs, it is a frustrating outcome but not a damaging one. Johan Lange has moved decisively throughout this window, and the senior business has been the headline story. Losing a 16-year-old academy prospect stings rather than hurts. Thompson is an exciting talent, and if he develops as his reputation suggests, Newcastle will have pulled off one of the better bits of youth recruitment this summer. Spurs will need to find an alternative.
