Manchester United transfer target Ederson will be offered a five-year contract by Atalanta if his move to Old Trafford collapses. The Brazilian's transfer to the Reds is at risk of falling through.

Having had a £38million offer be accepted, while also agreeing personal terms with the midfielder, Ederson recently sat a medical test, not long after Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup by Norway. Soon after, it was claimed a knee injury was spotted during the medical, putting his move at risk.

United have insisted they have not cancelled a deal for the South American. However, his current club are already planning their next move should the Red Devils walk away.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed Atalanta are readying a new five-year deal for the 27-year-old, suggesting they are confident he will not be going anywhere. They also trust his fitness condition, despite the reported results from United's medical.

Michael Carrick's side have endured a difficult transfer window. They are desperate for new central midfielders having lost Casemiro this season and also seen Manuel Ugarte pick up a serious knee injury at the World Cup.

United have already been priced out of previous midfield targets Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, who moved to Manchester City for £116m and Tottenham for £100m respectively. Mateus Fernandes, who had been tracked for several weeks, also snubbed United to move to Spurs for £85m.

One positive for United is the fact they are close to wrapping up a £48m move for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, but they are still short in the midfield area. The likes of Roma star Manu Kone and Real Madrid ace Aurelien Tchouameni are still being linked with Old Trafford.

United enjoyed a successful transfer window last season when they bought Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens. All four players enjoyed a strong debut campaign at Old Trafford, which helped Carrick guide the club to third position.

At the end of last season, Carrick insisted his side need to be further strengthened this summer if they are to compete. He said: "There's obviously work to do.

"It's quite obvious, with certain players leaving, there's a bit of work to do, but it's not any more important this one than the last one, it's what's ahead of us as a football club to try and make the most of."

In pre-season, United face Wrexham, Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds United and AC Milan, before they start their Premier League campaign on August 22nd with an away clash against newly promoted Hull City.
