Former Ipswich Town forward Conor Chaplin is closing in on a move to Leicester City, with the 29‑year‑old set to undergo a medical today ahead of a free transfer. As first revealed by Football League World back in June, the Foxes have been plotting a move for the ex‑Blue following his release from Portman Road, and now the deal is edging closer.
Chaplin’s departure earlier this summer brought an end to a hugely influential spell in Suffolk. His impact during Ipswich’s rise from League One to the Premier League remains one of the defining stories of the McKenna era, and his numbers underline just how important he was.
Chaplin’s Ipswich Impact
Chaplin produced 39 goals and 14 assists in 89 league appearances for Town, becoming a central figure in the club’s resurgence. His movement, finishing and relentless work‑rate made him a fan favourite and a key part of the attacking identity that powered Ipswich back into the top flight.
His influence stretched beyond goals: Chaplin was often the pressing trigger, the link between midfield and attack, and one of the most trusted figures in McKenna’s system. Even after falling out of favour last season, his contribution to Ipswich’s rise remains significant.
Loan Spell at Portsmouth
Chaplin spent last season on loan at Portsmouth in the Championship after slipping down the pecking order at Portman Road. Despite playing regularly, he managed two goals and three assists in 36 league games, unable to rediscover the form he showed in Suffolk.
The forward has experience across all three EFL divisions, having previously represented Coventry City, Barnsley and Portsmouth before joining Ipswich.
Leicester Move Nears Completion
According to John Percy, Chaplin is now set for a medical at Leicester today, with the Foxes aiming to add proven EFL quality ahead of a crucial season where promotion will be the primary target. He is expected to follow Danny Ings through the door as part of a rebuild designed to bring experience, goals and leadership into the squad.
Chaplin’s blend of maturity, versatility and Championship know‑how is seen as a major asset for Leicester, who believe he can replicate the impact he had at Ipswich during their climb out of League One.
Ipswich Angle
For Town supporters, Chaplin’s next move will be watched closely. His role in Ipswich’s revival was substantial, and Leicester will be hoping he can rediscover the same spark that helped fire the Blues back into the big time. Even away from Portman Road, Chaplin’s career trajectory continues to reflect the quality Ipswich developed during their rise.
