Paris Saint-Germain could make a sensational swoop for Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne.
The Champions League holders are targeting the France international after an impressive World Cup campaign in which he has won the left-back berth and started three consecutive knockout games en route to the semi-final.
That comes after another consistent season for Villa in which he once again held off the challenge of Ian Maatsen to play in 44 matches, including all the big games in the Europa League run-in.
It has emerged, first revealed by the Daily Mail, there is a clause in Digne’s Villa contract that if triggered, as seems likely, which will allow him to speak to PSG. The exact figure of the deal isn't known but it could be below £10million.
Digne was brought to Villa by Steven Gerrard from Everton in January 2022 and while he has taken time to prove himself to Unai Emery, similarly Maatsen has found it difficult to dislodge the 32-year-old.
Indeed Digne has made 182 appearances for Villa since then and is now undoubtedly Emery's first choice left-back. He is also one of the club's bigger earners and with Maatsen as an alternative, the financial opportunities for Villa could well work for them too.
Coincidentally Villa are due to face PSG in the UEFA Super Cup on August 12.
The revelation comes just minutes after it emerged a clause in Youri Tielemans’ deal has made him a target for Manchester United.
