Where Ederson stands as Youri Tielemans set for Man Utd medical in stunning transfer move

Ederson failed a medical at Manchester United last week and with the Red Devils quickly moving to sign Youri Tielemans after agreeing a deal for Andrey Santos, his move has become uncertain

Manchester United remain open to signing Ederson, despite preparing for the double arrival of fellow midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Aston Villa star Tielemans is set to have a medical with United on Tuesday after they triggered his £35million release clause on the same day that they announced Santos' £50m move from Chelsea.

Tielemans has rarely mentioned among the many midfielders linked with United this summer, so the deal comes as a surprise. That's unlike Ederson, who the Red Devils have had a £38.8m deal in place with Atalanta since early June.

The transfer is currently on hold after the Atalanta star failed a medical last week. But United are looking to renegotiate the deal in light of Ederson's knee injury, the Manchester Evening News report, and he could still join for a lower fee.

Ederson played twice for Brazil at the World Cup, during which he confirmed that his move to Old Trafford was 'practically all sorted'. The 27-year-old had part of his medical in the United States last month before flying to the UK for final checks after Brazil were knocked out by Norway in the last 16.

Ederson was identified by United manager Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox as a replacement for Casemiro, who recently left Old Trafford following the expiry of his contract. Manuel Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury for Uruguay during the World Cup, leaving Kobbie Mainoo as the only available out-and-out midfielder in the senior squad.

Due to being away with England, Mainoo wasn't part of the group which returned for pre-season training last week. Santos became Carrick's first signing on Monday to finally kick-off United's summer business.

The Brazilian has put pen to paper a five-year contract plus the option of a further 12 months. Ex-Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow is also expected to join the Red Devils, having become a free agent this month.

Tielemans could make it a hat-trick before United's first pre-season friendly on Saturday against Wrexham. He's fresh from suffering heartbreak at the World Cup, having picked up a hamstring injury during the warm-up before Belgium's late 2-1 defeat to Spain.
