Former Nottingham Forest flop completes staggering £50m switch to Man United

Two years after his Nottingham Forest loan spell ended early, Andrey Santos has completed a £50 million move to Manchester United.

The midfielder was due to spend the full 2023/24 season with the Reds on loan from Chelsea. However, his City Ground stint was terminated midway through after he had made just two appearances in the Garibaldi.

The Brazilian went on to spend time at Strasbourg, then remained at Stamford Bridge last term. He has now left the Blues and completed a big-money switch to Old Trafford.

United have confirmed Santos has signed a five-year deal with the club, with the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months. Although the fee is undisclosed, reports have suggested it could rise up to £50m.

The arrival of the 22-year-old in the north west comes after United lost out to neighbours Manchester City in the battle for Elliot Anderson’s signature. Both clubs had been eyeing up the England international to strengthen their midfield options, but it was City who signed him from Forest for a British record £116m.

After completing his move to United, Santos said: “Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented.

“As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick, he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams.

“Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here. I know just how strong the squad is and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies.”

Santos made one start and one substitute appearance during his time at Forest. He started and played 89 minutes of a 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Burnley in August 2023, then came off the bench in a 3-0 Premier League loss away to Liverpool that October.

Santos was signed by Chelsea for £16m from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama in 2023. He made 47 appearances for the Blues.
